Just like in Windows XP, Windows ME and Windows 98, you can also launch MSCONFIG in Vista by going to your START MENU, click on RUN or just by simply clicking on Windows + R, in the field type in MSCONFIG and then hit OK or ENTER. This will open up the MSCONFIG utility window where you can start troubleshooting configuration errors. Once MSCONFIG utility is opened, you will notice a bit of a difference between the window of the MSCONFIG utility in Vista and its predecessors.

The System.ini and Win.ini tabs no longer exists in MSCONFIG Vista and the Boot.ini tab is now named Boot, plus an additional new tab which is titled as Tools. Opening the GENERAL tab, you will notice that it still contains all three startup options, wherein the Normal Startup is still the default which loads all the normal device drivers and services. The Diagnostic Startup loads only the basic services while the Selective Startup gives you the potion to selectively load system services and startup programs.

When you open the Boot tab, you will notice that the names are now more user-friendly compared to the syntax-based names used in the Boot.ini tab on the previous version. Additionally, there is a MAKE ALL BOOT SETTINGS PERMANENT check box in the lower right. This will give you the option to not keep track of any changes that you make. Therefore you will not be allowed to undo any changes by selecting Normal Setup in the General tab. In this version of MSCONFIG in Vista, you can now choose to configure the USB port as one of the kernel debugging options. The Services tab, just like the one in Windows XP, you will find the services that loads when the computer startup. You still have the option to enable and disable the services and to troubleshoot them when you think they might be contributing to a startup error or problem.

Startup tab gives you a list of all applications that run when Windows Vista starts. The manufacturer heading and the date disabled heading are the two new features that were added on the Startup tab of the MSCONFIG utility in Vista. These allow you to identify an application and keep track of the date when you disabled a startup program or application. The Tools tab is a comprehensive addition into the MSCONFIG in Vista. Here you will be able to see a detailed description of the available tools in your system just by clicking the Launch button.

If you have used MSCONFIG utility in other operating systems, in Windows XP for example, to troubleshoot startup errors, then it will not be hard for you to do the same in Windows Vista as you are already familiar of the functions of each tab. It will be much easier for you to use it because it has now a more detailed and comprehensive options. But if you are not that familiar, you should check for guidelines or tutorials on how to use it. That is the best way to know the function of the utility, and this way you will not mess up your computer and add up any more errors to it.
